"not running"
Any w123 sold as not running should be a red flag. What is your experience with diesels? If it is decent then go ahead. If you are a diesel noob I wouldnt touch it. Go out and compression test it if you are seriously looking.

Zero diesel experience besides what's rubbed off on me from my buddy who races Cummins trucks. It can't be THAT hard though. I was just thinking that if everything is there and the compression checks out it should be fixable pretty easily.

Offer $400 and listen to what 505 said down there.

This sounds like a reasonable plan...

lets just say the concepts are the same but the actual mechanics are different enough to cause issues to you trying to get it running. the OM617 is a great engine, but if neglected it can be a headache

But I mean, if you have compression, and fuel, and air, then something should explode.
I should just pick it up and take it to my buddy's shop and be all like 'fixitfixitfixit' and wait for him to do something stupid like swap a 12v Cummins into it.

compression, fuel at the right PSI and volume and the right timing, and air yes something should happen. That is an extreme oversimplification of what happens through the system

Yeah yeah yeah, engines are complicated or something. I've heard it all before!
